GT 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps 2002
The 2002 Proximus 24 Hours of Spa was the 2nd running of the Spa 24 Hours within the World Championship GT.
The GT class of that edition was dominated in number of cars by the Chrysler Viper GTS-R that was developed in conjunction with Chrysler of North America, Oreca of France, and Reynard Motorsport of the United Kingdom. That class did suffer lots of abandon (7 in total: 2 Chrysler, 3 Ferrari 550-GTS Maranello, 2 Porsche 911 RSR and 1 Lister ) for 5 to be classified (4 Chrysler and 1 Lister).
7 Porsche 911 GT3 ended in the GT-N class with 1 Ferrari 360 Modena.
The quartet Sebastien Bourdais, Vincent Vosse, Christophe Bouchut and David Terrien driving the Chrysler Viper #1 by Larbre Competition Chereau won the 2002 24 Hours of Spa.
Bobby Verdon-Roe, Justin Law, David Sterckx and Miguel Angel de Castro ended second with their Lister Storm #15. With its unique design, Lister used a modified version of Jaguar's V12 engine which made it « bestial » to drive following Van de Poel driving the #14. Lister was a very strong contender of Jaguar and Aston Martin in the second half of the 50th as a sportscar constructor. The name came back in the 80th to launch a GT in 1993.
The #2 Larbre Compétition Chereau Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by Jean-Luc Chéreau, Jean-Claude Lagniez, Didier Defourny and Carl Rosenblad finished 6th overall behind 3 N-GT cars.
The #12 Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by Fabio Babini, Marc Duez and Boris Derichebourg finished 8th overall and 4th in GT class.
The #11 Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by Paul Belmondo, Claude-Yves Gosselin and Ryo Fukuda finished 14th overall and last GT to finish the race.
The Lister Storm #14 was the last car to abandon after completing 424 laps which is more than several classified cars. Multi 24 hours of Spa winner Eric van de Poele was one the 4 drivers among Jamie Campbell-Walter, Andy Wallace and Nicolaus Springer.
Abandon for the #3 Team Carsport Holland / Racing Box Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by Mike Hezemans, Anthony Kumpen and Thierry Tassin. They did not cover half distance of the winers.
Both Ferraris 550 Maranello were among the early ones to abandon.
#22 BMS Scuderia Italia driven by Peter Kox, Enzo Calderari and Frédéric Dor did complete 41 laps;
#5 Force one racing with drivers David Halliday, Philippe Alliot, François Jakubowski and Vittorio Zoboli did complete 33 laps
